ifs Student Investor

The Student Investor is the premier economics/business competition in the UK. Hugely successful over the last 13 years, it is aimed primarily at 14-19 year-olds to introduce them to the heady world of the stock market, investments and business economics. During the 2007 challenge approximately 30,000 students took part from 900 schools and colleges.

What will your students get out of getting involved?

The competition is played online; when you register your team will automatically be given £100,000 to spend on your fantasy share portfolio. Students gain:

A clear understanding of how the stock market works and how it can be easily and dramatically influenced by international, economic and political events.

An insight into how business works, experiencing first-hand the nature of the business cycle and how it affects the economy and everyday life.

The ability to develop their research and analysis skills and work together as a team to achieve a common goal - ultimate success in the Challenge!

What teachers say about the Challenge

"The ifs Student Investor Challenge provides motivation for students to relate business studies to the real world, and is particularly useful in helping them to appreciate how companies are affected by internal influences."

Thomas Pennant, Sydenham High School

"Plymouth College is a very small school and this competition has caused the number doing economics and business GCSE to double overnight. Once again thank you for all your hard work on what has to be the premier/economics/business competition in the country."

J Shields, Plymouth College
